![]() Keith Richards – electric guitar, acoustic guitar, backing vocalsĮric Burdon & War version “Paint It Black”īefore Eric Burdon & War‘s 1970 version reached the charts in Netherlands, Eric Burdon & The Animals covered it in 1967 for their debut album, Winds of Change. The bass was also overdubbed by Bill Wyman playing on the bass pedals of a Hammond B3 organ. Both electric and acoustic guitars and the background vocals are provided by Richards. More literally, it is about using the visual trick of painting everything black in the mind’s eye. Brian Jones contributed the song’s signature sitar riff (having taught himself to play after a visit with George Harrison), and Jagger contributed the to lyrics (which many believe were penned by James Taylor), seemingly about a man mourning his dead girlfriend. Charlie Watts accompanied the organ by playing a vaguely Middle Eastern drum part Watts’ drum pattern became the basis for the final song. The song began with Wyman playing organ at a recording session, in parody of the group’s former co-manager Eric Easton, who had been an organist. In the US and UK, it was the first number one single to feature a sitar on the recording.Master track is featured in Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock. In 2004 it was ranked number 174 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. The single reached number one in both the United States and the United Kingdom charts in 1966. Bill Wyman claims in his books that the song was a collective effort of the group, a ‘Nanker-Phelge’ one, but mistakenly credited to Jagger/Richards at the end. Brian Jones contributed to the song’s signature riff. The song may have been written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, though this is disputed as James Taylor is also said to have written it to depict his drug experiences in New York City. Keith Richards has stated that the comma was added by the record label, Decca. It was originally titled “ Paint It Black” without a comma. “ Paint It, Black” is a song recorded by The Rolling Stones, released on as the first single from their fourth album Aftermath. ![]() I have included here some of the history of the song from Wikipedia. I hope you enjoy the song as much as I do! ![]() It came out during that war and the lyrics lend themselves well to what that war was. This song will always be linked with that war. Video 3 is the song along with some footage from the Vietnam war. Video 2 is the Rolling Stones performing it live in concert. In the above videos, video 1 is just a original chart version. I am not a huge Rolling Stones fan, but I have always really liked this song. Basically a list of the greatest drummers of all time have Carmine Appice’s DNA flowing through them. He’s drummed for Rod Stewart, Ted Nugent, Sly Stone, Michael Schenker, Vanilla Fudge and Ozzy Osbourne. If you’re somehow not aware of Carmine Appice, he has a career lasting more than 5 decades.
